Ahoi Ashtami 2024: Date, Significance, and Puja Timings

Ahoi Ashtami is an important festival observed by mothers for the well-being, longevity, and prosperity of their children. This fast is observed annually on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in the Kartik month. In 2024, Ahoi Ashtami will be observed on 24th October.

Significance:

Mothers fast from sunrise to sunset without consuming water (nirjala vrat) and pray to Goddess Ahoi (also known as Syau Mata) for the welfare and long life of their children. After sunset, the fast is broken by offering water (arghya) to the stars and performing puja. The custom of bathing in the Radha Kund at Govardhan on this day is also followed by some devotees.

Rituals:

1. After bathing in the morning, mothers take a vow to fast for their children's prosperity and well-being.
2. The northeast corner of the house is cleaned and decorated, and a red cloth is placed on a wooden platform with an image or idol of Ahoi Mata.
3. Some people draw a figure of Ahoi Mata on the wall, depicting children, animals, and stars.
4. A kalash (water vessel) filled with water and decorated with rice grains is placed alongside the deity.
5. A plate of offerings, including eight sweet puris (puffed bread) or pue (a traditional sweet), is prepared.
6. After the evening puja, mothers offer water to the stars and pray for their children's success and health.
7. The fast is then broken by consuming the offered sweets, and children are fed as well.
